Privacy Policy for Network Toolbox

DevNerd ("we," "our," or "us") operates the Network Toolbox mobile application (the "App") for Android (package name: xyz.devnerd.networktoolbox). We are committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy describes how the App handles your data, the permissions it requires, and your choices regarding the information collected.

By using the App, you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the App or grant it the requested permissions.

1. Local-First Privacy Commitment

The App is built with a strong focus on privacy and user control:

  • Local-Only Storage: All of your diagnostic logs, speed test histories, ping sessions, LAN scans, and other measurement data are stored locally in an SQLite database on your device. We do not operate cloud servers to store or synchronize your measurement history.
  • Optional Usage Analytics & Crash Reporting: The App uses Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics to understand which features are used and to catch bugs. See Section 2.C for details, and Section 3 for how to turn this off.
  • Data Control: You can wipe all locally stored logs, caches, and history at any time from within the App by navigating to Settings → Data → Clear cache & history.

2. Information Collected and Processed

While the App does not collect or store your personal information on external servers, certain features require processing data to function:

A. Network Diagnostic Tools

When you use tools like Speed Test, Ping, Traceroute, DNS Lookup, or Port Scanner, the App sends standard network packets to target hostnames or IP addresses that you specify.

  • Speed Tests: Connecting to a speed test endpoint (such as LibreSpeed, Cloudflare, or an iperf3 server) transmits and receives bulk data to measure your download, upload, ping, and jitter. This communicates your temporary public IP address to the test servers as a necessary part of network transport.
  • DNS and Lookup Queries: Making a DNS check or WHOIS lookup queries public DNS resolvers or WHOIS servers. No personal details are associated with these requests.

B. Public IP and Network Environment Details

To display your public IP address, ISP, and ASN on the home dashboard:

  • The App makes outbound HTTPS queries to trusted public IP verification endpoints (e.g., Cloudflare trace services).
  • These third-party services see your public IP address as part of the request. We do not store, log, or share this data.

C. Analytics and Crash Reporting (Firebase)

The App uses Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics (Google) to understand which features are popular and to diagnose crashes.

  • What is collected: Screen views, tool selections, in-app search terms, and outcomes of actions like purchases or feedback submissions (Analytics); crash logs, stack traces, and basic device/app version info at the time of a crash (Crashlytics). No diagnostic tool results (ping times, scan results, speed test data, etc.) are included in these events.
  • What it's used for: Understanding which tools and features people actually use, and fixing bugs faster.
  • Your control: This collection can be turned off at any time — see Section 3.

D. Advertisements (AdMob)

For non-premium users, the App integrates the Google Mobile Ads SDK (AdMob) to display ads (Native and Interstitial ads).

  • What they collect: The Google Mobile Ads SDK may collect device identifiers (such as the Google Advertising ID), IP address, device model, carrier network details, and approximate location (derived from IP) to serve and personalize advertisements, prevent fraud, and measure ad performance.
  • Premium Opt-Out: Users who upgrade to the premium tier will have ads completely disabled, and no ad SDK initialization or tracking will occur.

3. Your Choices: Turning Off Analytics & Crash Reporting

You can disable Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics collection at any time from within the App:

Settings → Privacy → "Share usage & crash data" — turn the switch off.

Your choice is saved on your device and re-applied every time you open the App. This does not affect ad delivery for non-premium users (see Section 2.D), which is controlled separately by upgrading to premium.

4. Device Permissions and Their Purpose

To perform its core network diagnostics, the App requests several system permissions on your Android device. We use these permissions solely to provide the functions you request:

  • android.permission.INTERNET
    Purpose: Required to run speed tests, execute ping/traceroute commands, check public IP and DNS resolver latency, perform WHOIS lookups, and load advertisements.
  • android.permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE
    Purpose: Allows the App to monitor active network connections (Wi-Fi, Cellular, Ethernet, VPN) and check if internet connectivity is available.
  • android.permission.ACCESS_WIFI_STATE
    Purpose: Used to query details of your current Wi-Fi connection (SSID, BSSID, RSSI/signal strength, link speeds, channel width, and 802.11 standards).
  • android.permission.CHANGE_WIFI_STATE
    Purpose: Used to initiate scans for nearby Wi-Fi access points.
  • android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION & android.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION
    Purpose: Required by the Android OS to perform Wi-Fi scans and access Wi-Fi details like SSIDs and BSSIDs. Note: The App does not track, record, or share your geographic position; location access is exclusively used for wireless network scanning as mandated by Android's security design.
  • android.permission.NEARBY_WIFI_DEVICES (Android 13+)
    Purpose: Allows the App to discover and scan nearby Wi-Fi access points without needing geographic location permissions on newer Android versions.
  • android.permission.READ_PHONE_STATE
    Purpose: Required to read cellular metrics, including your mobile carrier name, network technology type (LTE, 5G NSA/SA), roaming status, and SIM slot configuration.
  • android.permission.PACKAGE_USAGE_STATS & android.permission.QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES
    Purpose: Used by the Data Usage panel to calculate and display per-app network bandwidth consumption using Android's NetworkStatsManager.

5. Third-Party Links

The App may contain links to third-party services (such as looking up IP details, opening captive portals in custom tabs, or resolving WHOIS records). Clicking these links navigates you to external websites that are governed by their own privacy policies. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these external sites.

6. Children's Privacy

Our App does not target and is not designed for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect or store personal data from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided personal information to us, please contact us, and we will take immediate steps to delete any such information.

7. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy within the App or updating this page. You are advised to review this page periodically for any changes.
